TRUCKS

Overview of all Renault and Saviem trucks

So, Louis Renault constructed his first automobile towards the end of 1898. After that, it lasted only two years till the first truck was made. It was constructed on the chassis of a passenger’s car. Provided with a 3,5hp one-cylinder engine, the vehicle could transport some 250-kilograms of load. Just as was the case with the cars, the commercial vehicles showed a wide range of products. It is possible to carry one up to one hundred ton with a Renault truck. That Renault was'nt just a truck brand is proved through its long history, and the large amount of brands, which joined with it. Brands like: Berliet, Latil, Somua, Sinpar, Rochet, Schneider, Karrier (Roots Group), Dodge/Barreiros (Spain), Dodge (England), SOFIM (diesel engines factory, together with Fiat and Alfa Romeo) and Mack. Finally, through this concentration of strength, Renault came in the top five of greatest truck producers. The commercial vehicles made from 1900 till the early thirties were very distinctively based on passenger’s cars

1900-1929

The first real commercial truck, with a loading capacity of 1000 kilograms, turned up in 1906. From 1909 onwards heavier trucks have been produced, with 3, as well as 5 ton capacity, both with a four-cylinder engine. One typical identifying mark of every Renault in those days was the place of the radiator, which was behind the engine, in stead of in front of it.  During the First World War, the Renault Works had a great share in the production of war material. Some 300 trucks and artillery pullers were produced each month. After the war the production enlarged with several new types. Loading capacities from 1 to 7,5 ton were possible. The heaviest one was fitted with a 7,9 litres, four-cylinder engine.

1930-1939

In the course of the thirties, the so-called “mutton fists” (because of the bonnet’s shape) were replaced by trucks with a normal, upright radiator/grille. Also came, from that time onward, the first diesel engines out of the factory.
